Ripping Audio CD to MP3
Ripping audio CDs to MP3 is easier than ever these days, with a plethora of fine ripping
software packages available.
Most of the ripping software will automatically look up the CD you put into your computer, and fill
in all the relevant information on the MP3 tag, add the album cover art, sometimes lyrics to the
song, etc.
Some mainstream type all in one jukebox software, like Window's Media Player, MusicMatch
Jukebox, etc., will rip audio CDs for you, as well as organize and play them. Most pros or
audiophiles though, will prefer a standalone software program that does nothing but rip audio
CDs.
One of the biggest issues we hear about with the all in one software, usually comes from
Window's Media Player users; they will rip a bunch of CDs, then try to play them in another
software package, and they can't find any MP3s!
Media Player defaults to encoding songs to WMA format, which many software packages do not
play, and the users are then forced to use a conversion program to convert them to MP3 for use
on their favorite software, or portable player.
One of the better ripping software programs, is not only very good, but free! We are referring to a
program called AudioGrabber, which is used by many pros and disc jockeys. Used in
conjunction with the free LAME encoder, it produces very quick, and very good results, which are
used in many commercial establishments.
The main thing to remember about ripping, is to use a program that will produce MP3 encoded
songs, as they can be played on virtually anything, including most home DVD players. The other
formats, like WMA, are usually not supported by anybody but Microsoft.
